Sometimes you need AI to work within strict boundaries. Constraint-based prompting helps you specify exactly what the AI should and shouldn’t do.
Types of Constraints
- Length Constraints: Exactly 100 words, maximum 2 paragraphs
- Format Constraints: JSON, CSV, table, bullet points
- Content Constraints: Avoid certain topics, include specific elements
- Tone Constraints: Professional, casual, technical, friendly
- Knowledge Constraints: Use only provided information
- Logical Constraints: Must include counterarguments, must cite sources
Effective Constraint Language
Be clear and specific. Instead of “keep it brief,” try “200-250 words exactly.” Instead of “professional tone,” specify “suitable for C-suite executives in a formal presentation.”
Example Constraint Prompt
“Write a product review in exactly 150 words. Format as three paragraphs: strengths, weaknesses, recommendation. Use a friendly but honest tone. Do not mention price.”
Challenge: Multiple Constraints
When combining many constraints, prioritize them clearly. The AI will try to satisfy all constraints, but explicit prioritization helps when conflicts arise.
